If you are going through a complex legal process, it is important that you choose an attorney who you can trust. One way to ensure your attorney is trustworthy is to do online research. The clients of Eric Phillips at Georggin Law failed to verify Phillips status as a lawyer and got burned by a man who is now facing 20 years in prison for committing fraud.

Our attorneys at Wallin & Klarich have top ratings on Avvo and Lawyers.com by Martindale-Hubbell. We are always available to our clients via phone, email or even social media. When you put your trust in Wallin & Klarich, you can rest assured that your case is in very capable hands.

Eric Phillips held the title of “senior vice president” of the San Diego law firm Georggin Law. He helped found the firm with George Georggin in 2010. Georggin Law advocated itself as a “consumer credit advocacy firm” with attorneys who will “work diligently to help our clients achieve, retain and maintain the credit they deserve.”

Phillips was able to attract clients at real estate offices, claiming he could get short sales and foreclosures removed from their credit reports. He said he had won more than 600 small claims cases with a 100% success rate throughout his 34 years as an attorney.

However, Phillips was not an actual attorney. After pleading guilty to one count of mail fraud, Phillips now faces up to 20 years in prison. Sentencing is set to take place in February. George Georggin agreed to surrender his license to practice law.

How to Look for a Lawyer Online

The case of Eric Phillips illustrates why it is necessary to conduct research before you retain a lawyer. A search for Georggin Law on Yelp reveals several negative reviews dating back to May 2012, some of which state that clients handed over thousands of dollars to the firm and never heard back.

Sites such as Avvo and Lawyers.com by Martindale-Hubbell exist so that potential clients can confirm an attorney’s practicing status and see ratings from both past clients and peers in the legal industry. If you are researching an attorney online, it is also recommended to actually verify the attorney’s status with the California State Bar on the association’s website.
